The St. Nikolai Memorial stands in central Hamburg as an evocative anti-war monument and reminder of World War II destruction. Completed in the 1870s, the Gothic Revival church was briefly the tallest building in the world until Allied bombing during Operation Gomorrah largely destroyed it in 1943. Preserved as a ruin, its soaring 147-meter spire features a glass elevator leading to an observation platform and an underground museum.
