Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, founded in 1827 by the merchant Naraina Pillai in Chinatown near South Bridge Road. A colourful tiered gopuram tower crowded with deity statues rises above the entrance; inside is the shrine of Mariamman, goddess who protects against disease. The annual fire-walking festival Theemithi is held here, and the temple remains an active place of worship.
