A monumental 15th-century stronghold rebuilt by Francesco Sforza upon earlier Visconti fortifications, this red-brick citadel long anchored Milan's defence and ducal court. Behind the towering Filarete gate and quiet courtyards lie civic museum collections preserving Leonardo da Vinci's leafy ceiling frescoes in the Sala delle Asse and Michelangelo's moving, unfinished final sculpture, the Rondanini Pietà.
