The seat of Venice's great confraternity of St Roch, under construction from 1519, holds the largest cycle by Jacopo Tintoretto: over fifty canvases painted in 1564–1588 for the Albergo hall and the Upper Hall, including the dramatic 'Crucifixion'. For sheer painterly density the building is called the 'Sistine Chapel of Venice'. Mirrors are handed out so you can study the ceilings without craning your neck.
