The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Vita is a late Baroque church situated in Bologna's historic Quadrilatero district. Celebrated for its soaring dome, the church houses one of the greatest masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance: the life-size terracotta sculpture group 'Lamentation over the Dead Christ' by Niccolò dell'Arca, dating from around 1463. Its seven figures convey an astonishingly intense and raw depiction of human grief.
