Erected between 1728 and 1770, the Royal Tobacco Factory of Seville is the second-largest historic building in Spain after El Escorial and an industrial masterwork. It famously provided the setting for Prosper Mérimée’s tale and Georges Bizet’s opera 'Carmen'. Surrounded by a defensive moat, the monumental stone complex features an ornate Baroque portal leading to serene courtyards, now housing the University of Seville's rectorate.
