The palace on Arsenal Hill was Ceausescu's megalomaniac brainchild and, by Guinness World Records, the heaviest building on Earth, begun in 1984 under chief architect Anca Petrescu. Over a thousand rooms dressed in marble, oak and tons of crystal; visitors see only part of it — grand staircases, conference halls and balconies overlooking Unirii Boulevard. Entry is by guided tour only with ID, and tickets are best booked ahead.
