The Marseille Opera House on Place Ernest Reyer marries an 18th-century classical exterior with an opulent Art Deco auditorium. Dating back to 1787, the building survived a devastating 1919 fire that left only its majestic Ionic colonnade intact. Reopened in 1924 under architect Gaston Castel, the hall boasts superb acoustics and relief sculptures by Antoine Bourdelle.
