Marseille's most iconic landmark, perched atop a 149-metre limestone outcrop on the foundations of a 16th-century fortress. Constructed between 1853 and 1864 in Romano-Byzantine style by Henri-Jacques Espérandieu, the basilica is crowned by an 11-metre gilded statue of the Virgin Mary, known fondly as La Bonne Mère. Inside, golden mosaics and ex-voto sailing models honor sailors, while wide terraces offer sweeping panoramas of the sea.
