The flagship of the New York Public Library is a marble Beaux-Arts palace opened in 1911. The marble lions Patience and Fortitude keep watch outside, while inside wait grand staircases, chandeliers and the Rose Main Reading Room, nearly 91 metres long beneath a painted sky. Display cases hold a Gutenberg Bible and other treasures. Entry is free, guided tours run daily, and Bryant Park sits right across the street.
