Colombo's national performing-arts theatre, opened in 2011 with Chinese funding and built in the shape of a giant lotus, echoing the 12th-century Nelum Pokuna lotus pond in Polonnaruwa that gave it the name. It is Sri Lanka's largest stage, hosting concerts, opera and traditional dance, and its illuminated facade has become one of the city's evening landmarks. From the outside it is free to admire at any time.
