The National Museum of Ancient Art is Portugal's principal art collection, opened in 1884 in the Alvor palace on the Tagus riverfront. Its stars are the 'Panels of Saint Vincent' by Nuno Gonçalves, the landmark of 15th-century Portuguese painting, Hieronymus Bosch's 'Temptation of Saint Anthony' and Dürer's 'Saint Jerome'. Since late September 2025 the museum has been closed for major renovation, with no reopening date announced.
