The National Gallery of Modern Art opened in 1954 inside Jaipur House, a 1936 residence built for the Maharaja of Jaipur by India Gate. Its collection of over 14,000 works charts Indian art from the mid-nineteenth century onward: portraits by Raja Ravi Varma, Bengal-school watercolours by Abanindranath Tagore, paintings by Amrita Sher-Gil and Jamini Roy. Gallery wings open onto a sculpture garden below the domed facade.
