Hamburg's history museum, set in a 1922 building by the Sternschanze park, told the city's story from Hanseatic privileges to the Great Fire of 1842 and the port districts: a famous large-scale city model, half-timbered interiors and ship models. The building is now closed for major renovation, with parts of the collection shown at temporary venues — check the programme before visiting.
