The Girondin Monument stands on the vast Place des Quinconces, one of the largest squares in Europe. A triumphal column topped by a Liberty statue breaking its chains, with twin bronze fountains celebrating France's rivers and seas, was raised between 1894 and 1902 to the deputies of the Gironde executed during the Terror. In summer the esplanade hosts funfairs and travelling circuses.
