Located slightly away from the city center, but easily accessible by public transport, is the beautiful and heavenly Mirogoj Cemetery. Designed by Hermann Bollé in 1876 at the foot of Mount Medvednica, the cemetery ranks among the top ten cemeteries in Europe. A tour of the cemetery is not frightening, but rather resembles a Neo-Renaissance castle with its walls covered in vines, arcades and chapels; ornate structures and greenery spread over 7 acres. As the most important cemetery in the country, many of Croatia's most famous former citizens are buried here. Politicians and artists, musicians and writers lie side by side with people of all religious denominations, and there are many impressive tombstones, monuments and statues scattered throughout the place. It is a beautiful cemetery where you can take a peaceful walk.
