The Marseille History Museum — France's largest urban history museum — stands directly above the excavations. Inside, the actual quays of the Greek colony of Massalia from the third century BC survive with their amphorae; the display runs from the city's founding by Greeks around 600 BC through the Middle Ages to nineteenth-century port glory. Beside it lies the Jardin des Vestiges with ancient walls. The permanent collection is free.
