Palais Longchamp in Marseille is a grand monument celebrating the 1869 completion of the Durance Canal, which brought fresh drinking water to the arid city. Designed by Henri-Jacques Espérandieu, the complex centres on an ornate water château with roaring cascades and statues of Camargue bulls. A curved neoclassical colonnade connects the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Natural History Museum, opening into landscaped gardens and public parks.
