The world-famous crooked section of Lombard Street, winding down Russian Hill between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets. Built in 1922 with eight sharp hairpin turns paved in red brick, the switchbacks were designed to tame the natural 27 percent slope for vehicles. Today, the pedestrian stairs along the winding route offer lovely views of blooming hydrangea gardens, Russian Hill Victorians, and the San Francisco Bay.

Highlights

  • Eight sharp hairpin switchbacks paved with red brick
  • Lush blooming hydrangea beds framing the street
  • Panoramic views towards Telegraph Hill and the Bay
