The Golden Pavilion of Kinkaku-ji is one of Kyoto's defining sights: a Zen Buddhist temple whose top two floors are completely covered in pure gold leaf. The pavilion reflects in the Mirror Pond amidst manicured pine islets. Originally built in the late 14th century as a shogun's villa for Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was rebuilt in 1955 after a fire. The walking path winds through a traditional tea garden.
