Kennin-ji Temple

Sight4.5 · 9 1644.5 · 1 037≈ 1 h 8 minEntry: ~800 JPY

Kyoto's oldest Zen temple, founded in 1202 by the monk Eisai, who is also credited with bringing tea to Japan. The complex sits at the edge of the Gion district; its signature sight is a pair of dynamic dragons painted across the ceiling of the Dharma hall for the temple's 800th anniversary in 2002. Do not miss the stone and maple gardens, the sliding-door paintings and the calm wooden halls. Sakura and autumn maples frame the visit seasonally.
