Rachel Whiteread's memorial on Judenplatz is a concrete cube conceived as a 'Nameless Library': the books' spines face inward, as if the victims' names were hidden forever. It was unveiled in 2000 in memory of the 65,000 Austrian Jews murdered in the Holocaust. Judenplatz was the centre of the medieval Jewish community for centuries — ruins of that era's synagogue can be seen in the museum beneath the square.
