The oldest surviving Confucian royal ancestral shrine in the world was built in 1394 by King Taejo, founder of the Joseon dynasty, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It enshrines the spirit tablets of deceased Joseon kings and queens. The main sanctuary, Jeongjeon, is one of the world's longest wooden buildings, famed for its solemn austerity. Centuries of tradition culminate in the historic Jongmyo Jerye ancestral ritual ceremony.
