The park just north of the Forbidden City, its artificial hill heaped up from the earth dug out for the palace moats. The five-tiered Wanchun Pavilion at the summit offers Beijing's classic panorama: the entire imperial complex unfolding along the north–south axis. Here in 1644 the last Ming emperor, Chongzhen, hanged himself by a locust tree as rebels stormed the city. Entry costs pocket change; the view is priceless.
