Igreja de Sao Roque was among the first Jesuit churches in the world, built in Lisbon in the late 16th century. The austere facade deceives: inside stand carved gilded altars and the Chapel of St John the Baptist, finished in Rome with marble, amethysts and lapis lazuli and shipped to Lisbon in 1747. Contemporaries called it the costliest chapel in Europe. The church survived the 1755 earthquake and still holds services.
