Heian Jingu Shrine in Kyoto was built in 1895 to mark the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of the ancient capital Heian-kyo. Its architecture is a partial scale replica of the 8th-century Imperial Palace, featuring striking vermilion pillars and emerald-green tiled roofs. Approaches are framed by a massive 24-metre torii gate. Behind the main halls lies the Shin-en garden, celebrated for its ponds and weeping cherry blossoms.
