The neo-Gothic seat of Hamburg's senate and parliament, opened in 1897: sandstone walls, a 112-metre tower and 647 rooms — more than Buckingham Palace. The building rests on 4,000 oak piles driven into the marshy Elbe bank. The inner courtyard with the Hygieia fountain can be entered for free, while the state rooms are shown on guided tours several times a day; the facade and Rathausmarkt square cost nothing.
