Fonseca Port Wine Cellars

Porto's sister city, Gaia, has beaches and famous port wine cellars. They are magnificent, with tours that teach you the history of the drink and the distinctive characteristics of each variety (there are many varieties of port). Each tour ends with a happy finale: a port wine tasting. Although technically a separate city, Vila Nova de Gaia is located directly opposite Porto across the Douro River and is woven into the fabric of the city both through a series of bridges and through a shared history of port wine production. The most popular tourist attraction in Gaia is the Port Wine Cellars, warehouses where the famous port wine is stored. The cellars are located in Ribeira de Gaia, a district of the city situated on the bank of the Douro River opposite Porto.
