The Earth and People National Museum on Cherni Vrah boulevard is a mineralogical collection among Europe's richest: some 20,000 specimens of rocks, crystals and gemstones. Giant amethyst geodes, native gold and ores from Bulgarian deposits look almost cosmic in dark halls with spot-lit vitrines, and separate stands explain how minerals form. A calm, uncrowded stop — a good hour's rest from the city.
