One of Scotland's best-preserved medieval strongholds, Craigmillar Castle was founded by the Preston family in the late 14th century. It is famously tied to Mary, Queen of Scots, who took refuge here in 1566 following the murder of David Rizzio; within its walls nobles plotted the fateful 'Craigmillar Bond'. Visitors can climb the tower house for sweeping views over Edinburgh, Holyrood Park, and Arthur's Seat.

Highlights

  • Refuge of Mary, Queen of Scots and site of the Craigmillar Bond
  • Late 14th-century medieval tower house and courtyards
  • Rooftop panoramic views over Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh
