Set on the Île de la Cité along the Seine, the Conciergerie is a magnificent Gothic landmark and a poignant witness to French history. Originally part of the medieval Capetian royal palace, it boasts the colossal 14th-century Hall of the Men-at-Arms, Europe's largest surviving Gothic secular room. During the French Revolution, the fortress became a notorious prison where Marie Antoinette and hundreds of others awaited the guillotine.

Highlights

  • Monumental 14th-century Gothic Hall of the Men-at-Arms with vaulted pillars
  • Historic reconstructed prison cell of Queen Marie Antoinette
  • Iconic medieval defensive towers lining the banks of the Seine
