Brussels has been synonymous with comics since the debut of Tintin and Spirou in the 1930s. While the city is home to the famous comics museum – the Belgian Comic Strip Center – it also boasts several murals dedicated to characters such as Lucky Luke, the Smurfs, Gaston Lagaffe, Tintin and Spirou. These murals light up the sides of buildings and are so widespread that you can even book a cycling or walking tour to see some of the most popular ones. The ninth art can be found everywhere: in shops, galleries, flea markets, festivals and much more. And since 1991, the city's walls have been gradually covered with frescoes paying tribute to the authors and their many characters. You can turn a corner and come face to face with Tintin, Cubitus, Billy and Buddy, Blake and Mortimer, or Corto Maltese.
