Paris's most famous cemetery, opened in 1804: hills, winding lanes and tens of thousands of tombs ranging from modest slabs to chapel-like mausoleums. Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Édith Piaf, Chopin, Modigliani and Balzac are buried here, and the Communards' Wall commemorates the defenders of the Paris Commune of 1871. Pick up a plan at the gate — it is easy to get lost.

Highlights

  • Graves of Morrison, Wilde, Piaf and Chopin
  • Communards' Wall of 1871
  • Some 44 hectares of tombs and lanes
