The Church of Saint Francis is a 14th-century Gothic temple near the Ribeira waterfront whose austere facade hides one of Portugal's most lavish baroque interiors. The walls are sheathed in gilded carving of the 17th-18th centuries using around a hundred kilograms of gold — wood all but replaces stone. The Tree of Jesse and carved altars deserve attention. Catacombs with an ossuary lie beneath, where friars and notable citizens were buried.
