The head temple of the Jodo (Pure Land) school stands on the Higashiyama slope where the monk Honen preached. The Tokugawa family rebuilt it in the 17th century: the Sanmon gate is the largest wooden temple gateway in Japan, and the 1633 bell, weighing some 70 tons, is swung by 17 monks on New Year's Eve. The grounds are free to wander, while the gardens and painted halls need a separate ticket. A long staircase climbs up from the Gion side.
