Carved into the porous volcanic tuff of the Capodimonte hill beneath the Sanità district, these paleochristian catacombs form an extraordinary two-level underground cemetery. Dating from the 2nd to 5th centuries AD, the labyrinthine chambers served as sacred burial vaults and worship sites for early Christians. Highlights include the Crypt of the Bishops, the original tomb of Saint Januarius, and remarkably preserved fresco murals.
