A romantic landscape park of about twenty hectares at the foot of Madrid's Royal Palace, laid out from the time of Philip II and restyled in the English manner during the 19th century. Shaded lawns, fountains and tree-lined paths climb toward the palace, whose western facade looks at its most dramatic from below. Entry is free and the gardens open daily, with access from the Paseo de la Virgen del Puerto by the Manzanares river.
