A hidden inner courtyard dating from the 14th century, home to the beguines — laywomen of a Catholic community who lived without monastic vows. Period Amsterdam houses ring the lawn, including the city's oldest wooden house (c. 1528), and the English Reformed Church still stands here. Entry is through an unmarked passage off the Spui; it is free, but this is a lived-in courtyard, so quiet is expected. One of the calmest corners of the centre.
