Guarding the entrance to Venice's Grand Canal in Dorsoduro, this magnificent Baroque basilica was commissioned in 1630 as a votive offering for the city's deliverance from a devastating plague. Architect Baldassare Longhena designed the octagonal sanctuary, resting upon more than 100,000 wooden piles and topped by a colossal dome framed by spiral buttresses. The interior preserves masterworks by Renaissance giants Titian and Tintoretto.
