Porto's grand central boulevard and civic heartbeat was named to honour the Allied alliance of World War I. The sweeping avenue with central promenade gardens and palms is framed by imposing neoclassical and Art Deco granite facades built in the early 20th century. At its northern crest stands the monumental City Hall with its 70-metre clock tower, while Praça da Liberdade at the southern foot features an equestrian bronze of King Pedro IV.
