Arthur's Seat

Nature4.8 · 5 0314.7 · 21 841≈ 1 h 8 minFree entry

An extinct volcano rising 251 metres in the heart of Edinburgh, the highest summit of the royal Holyrood Park. The climb from the ruins of Holyrood Abbey takes roughly 40-50 minutes on a well-trodden path and rewards you with a circular panorama of the Old Town, the Firth of Forth and the Lothian hills. Just below sit the steep basalt cliffs of Salisbury Crags. Weather changes fast: even in summer the top is windy, so pack a windproof layer.

Highlights

  • 251 m volcano in the city centre
  • Old Town and Firth of Forth views
  • Roughly 40-50 minute ascent
  • Salisbury Crags on the way up
