The Venetian Arsenal is a colossal historic complex of shipyards and armouries founded in 1104, which underpinned the naval dominance of the Venetian Republic. Pioneering mass-assembly production techniques, it could outfit entire warships in a single day. Its grand gateway, Porta Magna, is framed by ancient marble lions brought from Greece. Today, its preserved covered docks and Corderie ropeworks host Venice Biennale exhibitions.

Highlights

  • Porta Magna gateway, one of the earliest Renaissance structures in Venice
  • Four antique Greek marble lions guarding the arsenal entrance
  • Historic Corderie ropeworks and covered shipbuilding basins
