The Archiginnasio is the historic seat of the University of Bologna, commissioned in 1563 by architect Antonio Morandi. Until the early 19th century, scholars from across Europe studied here, leaving behind over six thousand student and faculty coats of arms along the arcades. Its crown jewel is the 17th-century wooden Anatomical Theatre, flanked by Ercole Lelli's flayed statues.
