Completed by Roman Emperor Valens in AD 368, this monumental aqueduct was the central artery of Constantinople's water supply system through Byzantine and Ottoman times. Its preserved two-tiered stone section stretches nearly a kilometre, towering up to 29 metres above modern traffic on Atatürk Boulevard in the Fatih district. The limestone arches stand as an imposing testament to Roman engineering surviving in the heart of Istanbul.
