The ruins of a Roman amphitheatre on the slopes of the Croix-Rousse, built in the 1st century under Augustus for delegates of the Gallic provinces — hence the name 'of the Three Gauls'. Here in 177 AD the first Christian martyrs of Lyon were executed, commemorated by a memorial nearby. Only fragments of the great arena survive, and the spot is usually quiet.
