A bronze Alan Turing sits on a bench in Sackville Gardens, at the heart of Manchester's gay village: an apple in his hands, his gaze pensive. The memorial was unveiled on 23 June 2001, Turing's birthday. It was in Manchester that he worked at the university on the earliest electronic computers, and it was his wartime work that helped crack the Enigma code.
