Athens' ancient cemetery and the potters' quarter that gave 'ceramics' its name. The double Dipylon gates stood here, roads set out for the Academy and Eleusis, and along the Street of Tombs survive 4th-century-BC gravestones with finely carved reliefs. A small museum displays funerary sculpture and vases; olive trees offer shade even in summer.
