Igreja do Carmo

Sight4.5 · 5 2114.3 · 1 184≈ 45 minEntry: ~4 €581 m from the center

An exquisite eighteenth-century rococo church that stands among the most photographed landmarks in Porto. Its vast lateral exterior is adorned with thousands of traditional blue-and-white azulejo tiles installed in 1912, illustrating the founding of the Carmelite Order. Inside, lavish gilded wood carvings gleam in the chapels, while Porto's narrowest residence, the one-metre-wide 'Hidden House', separates it from a sister church.

Highlights

  • Monumental blue-and-white azulejo tilework on side facade
  • Lavish gold-leaf woodwork throughout the baroque chapels
  • The quirky one-metre-wide 'Hidden House' wedged next door
