Manchester Cathedral is a 15th-century Gothic church on the banks of the River Irwell, raised to cathedral status in 1847. Inside survive finely carved 15th- and 16th-century choir stalls, stained glass from many eras and contemporary art pieces; the Angel Wings sculpture honours victims of war. Entry is free, donations welcome. The on-site refectory cafe serves lunch, and the Arndale shopping centre is a ten-minute walk away.
