Daigo-ji monastery in south-eastern Kyoto was founded in 874 and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Its emblem is the five-storey pagoda of 951, the oldest building in the city. The Sanbo-in garden was laid out for the cherry blossom party that Toyotomi Hideyoshi held here in 1598. The Bentendo hall stands by the pond, and a trail of about an hour climbs to the upper temple on the mountain.
